Howrah Maidan ↔ Salt Lake Sector V

The Green Line (Line 2), also called the East–West Metro, runs 16.6 km from Howrah Maidan to Salt Lake Sector V. It is famous for being India’s first under-river metro: the tunnels dip beneath the Hooghly river to connect Howrah with central Kolkata.

The corridor opened in stages between 2020 and 2025. The landmark Howrah Maidan–Esplanade section beneath the river opened on 6 March 2024, and the final continuous link was completed on 22 August 2025.

Howrah is the deepest metro station in India, around 33 metres below ground. The line connects the two busiest railway terminals in eastern India — Howrah and Sealdah — and the Salt Lake IT hub, interchanging with the Blue Line at Esplanade.
