About Mahanayak Uttam Kumar

Named after the legendary Bengali film actor Uttam Kumar (1926–1980), called the "Mahanayak" (Great Hero) of Bengali cinema. The station serves Tollygunge — historically the heart of Bengali film production (Tollywood). Major film studios and the historic Tollygunge Club are nearby.

For twenty-three years this was the end of the line. Opened on 29 April 1986 as Tollygunge, it was the southern terminus until the elevated extension reached Kavi Nazrul in 2009, and it is the only station on the original stretch built at grade rather than in tunnel — the tracks emerge here beside the depot. It was renamed for Uttam Kumar, the actor who defined Bengali cinema for a generation, and the studios of Tollywood that gave the neighbourhood its name are close by.
