About Central

Central serves the heart of the commercial and judicial district. Close to the Calcutta High Court, General Post Office, and BBD Bagh (Dalhousie Square) — the colonial-era centre with the iconic Writers' Building.

Central is the odd one out on the original line: instead of the single island platform used everywhere else in the 1984–1995 tunnel, it was built as a Spanish solution — two side platforms plus an island — so that passengers can board on one side and alight on the other. The station opened on 19 February 1995 and serves the commercial and judicial core: the Calcutta High Court, the General Post Office and BBD Bagh, with the Writers' Building a few minutes away.
