Dakshineswar ↔ Kavi Subhash
The Blue Line (Line 1) is the original Kolkata Metro and the first metro line ever built in India, opened on 24 October 1984. It runs north–south for 31.4 km between Dakshineswar and Kavi Subhash (New Garia), forming the backbone of the city’s rapid transit network.
The line threads through the dense heart of Kolkata — largely underground beneath Chowringhee and the central business district, and elevated towards both terminals. It links the Dakshineswar Kali Temple in the north with the southern suburbs around New Garia.
The Blue Line interchanges with the Green Line at Esplanade and with the Orange Line at Kavi Subhash. It is operated by Metro Railway, Kolkata, a zone of Indian Railways — the only metro in India run directly by the national railway.

Did you know?
- The Blue Line was India's first metro; the very first commercial section (Esplanade–Bhowanipore) opened on 24 October 1984.
- It is a mix of underground and elevated alignment — the central stretch runs in tunnel beneath the colonial core of the city.
- Dakshineswar, the northern terminus, sits beside the famous Dakshineswar Kali Temple on the Hooghly river.
- Kavi Subhash (New Garia) is a triple interchange in the making — today it connects the Blue and Orange lines.
Connections and interchanges
The Blue Line is the most connected corridor in Kolkata:
- Esplanade ↔ Green Line — walk to the East–West corridor towards Howrah and Salt Lake.
- Kavi Subhash ↔ Orange Line — interchange for the New Garia–Airport line.
- Dum Dum and Esplanade connect to Indian Railways suburban services and the dense Kolkata bus network.
