About Mahatma Gandhi Road
Mahatma Gandhi Road is one of the busiest underground stations on Blue Line, serving the famous Burrabazar wholesale market — Asia's largest wholesale trade hub. From textiles to spices, metalware to the historic Tagore family residence at Jorasanko nearby, this is the commercial heart of old Kolkata.
Mahatma Gandhi Road was the last piece of the original north–south line to open, on 27 September 1995, closing the gap between Central and Girish Park and completing a project that had been under construction since 1972. The station is underground with a single island platform. It sits at the edge of Burrabazar, the wholesale district, which means the streets above are some of the most congested in the city and the metro is often the only sensible way through.
