What has changed on the network
Newest first. Each entry says where it came from and what it means for a passenger, and carries a clear mark separating what is in force today from what has only been announced. Announced projects do not appear on our map or in the route planner until they actually open.

Orange Line to the airport
The Orange Line is being extended north from Beleghata to the airport by way of Salt Lake Sector V and New Town. The tunnelling breakthrough at Chingrighata has been made, but structures are still incomplete at Chinar Park, Nabadiganta and Nazrul Tirtha, and the target for reaching the airport has moved to December 2027. An earlier stage — Beleghata to the IT Centre, which would give an interchange with the Green Line at Sector V — is being aimed at first. What it means for you: nothing yet. Beleghata remains the end of the line, and none of this appears on our map or in the route planner.

Purple Line onward to Esplanade
The Purple Line still runs as an isolated stretch between Joka and Majerhat with no connection to any other metro line. The extension towards Esplanade is in its tunnelling phase, with boring machines working between Kidderpore, Victoria and Park Street. What it means for you: until it is finished, the practical way on into the city from the Purple Line is the suburban railway interchange at Majerhat.

Three sections opened on the same day
The Prime Minister inaugurated three stretches on 22 August 2025 and fare-paying service began on 25 August: the Yellow Line from Noapara to Jai Hind (the airport), the Orange Line from Hemanta Mukhopadhyay to Beleghata, and — the one that changed the most — the Green Line between Sealdah and Esplanade. What it means for you: the Green Line finally runs end to end from Howrah Maidan to Salt Lake Sector V instead of as two disconnected halves, Esplanade became the only place where the Blue and Green lines meet, and Kolkata got a direct rail link to its airport.

A ₹10 surcharge on the late-night Blue Line trains
The special late services on the Blue Line between New Garia and Dum Dum — the extra pair of trains that run after the normal last train — now carry a flat ₹10 surcharge on top of the fare, whatever the distance. The reason given was low occupancy on those runs. What it means for you: the late train still exists, but it is not priced like the rest of the timetable. Check the last-train times on the schedule page before relying on it.

India’s first under-river metro opened
Inaugurated on 6 March 2024 and open to passengers from 15 March: the Green Line stretch from Howrah Maidan to Esplanade, which runs in a tunnel beneath the Hooghly — the first stretch of metro built under a river in India. The same day brought the Purple Line’s single stop from Taratala to Majerhat and the Orange Line’s first section from Kavi Subhash to Hemanta Mukhopadhyay. What it means for you: Howrah Junction is now a few minutes from Esplanade instead of a bridge crossing, and Howrah is the deepest metro station in the country.

The Purple Line opened — and stayed on its own
The Joka to Taratala stretch was inaugurated on 30 December 2022 and started carrying passengers on 2 January 2023, bringing the metro to Behala for the first time. What it means for you: it is genuinely useful within south-west Kolkata, but it does not yet connect to any other metro line, so a journey from Joka into the centre still needs a change to rail or bus at Majerhat.

Why other sites quote different numbers
Opening dates: the inauguration or the first ride?
In India a minister usually inaugurates a section days before it starts carrying fare-paying passengers, and different sites pick different dates. The August 2025 sections were inaugurated on the 22nd and opened on the 25th; the March 2024 sections on the 6th and the 15th; Joka–Taratala on 30 December 2022 and 2 January 2023. We publish the day you could actually ride, and name the inauguration date beside it.
Station count: 55, 58 or something else?
Three stations — Esplanade, Noapara and Kavi Subhash — are served by two lines each. Add up the lines and you get 58 slots; count the stations themselves and you get 55. We count stations, because that is what matters when you are planning a journey.
Five lines or six?
Five are running: Blue, Green, Yellow, Purple and Orange. The Pink Line appears on plenty of maps but is planned, not built, and you will not find it here.
“Trams serve the streets around the station”
They mostly do not, any more. Kolkata’s tram network is down to two routes — route 5 from Esplanade to Shyambazar and route 25 from Esplanade to Gariahat. We say so on the two station pages where it is true and nowhere else. (This one was our own mistake: until August 2026 all 55 of our station pages claimed it.)
