The Purple Line (Line 3), the Joka–Esplanade corridor, currently runs as an elevated 8.1 km segment between Joka and Majerhat in the south-west of Kolkata, serving the Behala and Joka neighbourhoods that previously had no rail link.

The first stretch (Joka–Taratala) opened in 2022, and the extension to Majerhat opened on 6 March 2024. It runs largely above Diamond Harbour Road, with the main depot at Joka.

The line is being extended onward to Esplanade via Mominpur and Khidirpur. When that section opens it will connect the Purple Line into the wider network alongside the Blue and Green lines. For now it operates as a standalone corridor.

Did you know?

  • The Purple Line finally gave the populous Behala and Joka belt a direct rapid-transit link.
  • It runs mostly elevated along Diamond Harbour Road, one of the busiest arterials in south-west Kolkata.
  • Majerhat is built beside Majerhat railway station on the Sealdah–Budge Budge line.
  • An under-construction extension to Esplanade will eventually link the line to the Blue and Green corridors.

Connections and interchanges

The Purple Line is currently a standalone segment:

  • Majerhat — adjacent to Majerhat railway station (Sealdah South suburban services towards Budge Budge).
  • Future: the extension to Esplanade will create interchanges with the Blue and Green lines.
  • Buses and autos along Diamond Harbour Road connect every station to the surrounding neighbourhoods.
