About Kalighat
Kalighat serves one of the most important Hindu pilgrimage sites in India — the Kalighat Kali Temple, one of the 51 Shakti Peethas. The temple dates from 1809 in its present form but the site has been revered for over 500 years.
The area around the temple is dense with religious goods shops, sweet shops, and the famous Kalighat patachitra painting tradition.
Kalighat is a pilgrimage station. The Kali temple a short walk away is one of the fifty-one Shakti Peethas and among the most visited shrines in eastern India, and the lanes leading to it are lined with flower and offering stalls that trade from before dawn. The station opened on 29 April 1986 with the extension to Tollygunge and is underground with a single island platform. Crowds here follow the religious calendar rather than the office one, so it can be busiest on days when the rest of the line is quiet.
