About Dum Dum

Dum Dum is one of the most important transit stations of Kolkata Metro. It interchanges directly with Dum Dum Junction on Indian Railways, connecting metro passengers to suburban rail services. The Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport is about 5 km north.

Dum Dum is one of the two stations that opened on 12 November 1984, in the second week of metro service anywhere in India, and it remains the single most useful interchange on the Blue Line for anyone arriving by train: Dum Dum Junction, on the Sealdah suburban network, is right alongside. The station is elevated with two side platforms. The name comes from the ordnance factory whose expanding bullet gave the English language a word — a piece of etymology the neighbourhood has never quite shaken off.
